June is an 11 year old girl growing up in the south. She fears and resists that awful turn toward becoming a young woman. In her stories she is baptized, she touches a penis, she watches funerals from afar, and she fantasizes about and spies on an elderly woman in her neighborhood. She distances herself from those she is closest to, yet she fears loneliness and abandonment. She recognizes the growing distances between herself and her parents. She lives in two worlds and no one knows about one of them.

Mattie is in her 30’s. She has two kids, a husband and no home. She picks and plants fruit and vegetables and makes little money. She travels and longs for a place to stop and rest. She struggles with depression, and since she has no health care, her mental illness goes untreated. She spirals into some very dark places. She considers suicide. She distances herself from those she is closest to, yet she fears loneliness and abandonment. She thinks often of her mentally ill mother and her abusive father. She recognizes the distance that has grown between those relationships, yet she craves them at the same time. She craves and detests being touched. She lives in two worlds and no one knows about one of them.

Living Dead Girl is in her 30’s. Since losing her partner, she has struggled with depression. At first she has no health care, and her illness went untreated for a long period of time. Even once she has enough income, insurance and bravery to seek treatment, she continues to spiral into some very taker places. She considers suicide. She distances herself from those she is closest to, yet she fears loneliness and abandonment. She thinks often of her mentally ill mother and her abusive father. She lives in two worlds she learns much about her Self through psychotherapy. Living Dead Girl tries new medication when one does not work;  this happens often. She collects bottles of pills that have been rendered useless because they do not adequately balance the chemicals in her brain. This continues for several years. She continues to try to locate and position herself within a comfortable world and an authentic life.
